Jennifer is incredible!! From the service, her gentle hands, hair care advice and our friendly chats, she’s amazing! I’ve never had anyone style my hair the way she has. I had to work whilst in the salon and she was so patient with me taking calls. Jen constantly offers teas / coffees, checks in to make sure water temp is okay and generally is such a wonderful person! As I said today, she’s my “go to girl!”. Thanks for always making me look good Jen ❤️❤️

Rhianna

Hi, my name is Rhianna.  I’m really excited to have joined the Afrotherapy team.  Here’s a bit more about me.

What Do You Love Most About Hairdressing?
I love that I feel at home when I’m in the salon, meaning comfortable and where I’m suppose to be. Hairdressing is always evolving with different techniques and trends so there is always something to learn or try to innovate yourself. It’s bring me close to people and to have conversations that we are not having or scared to talk to our family about; it’s not just hairdressing it’s connecting with people and creating relationships.

What Do You Specialise In?
Although I am all rounder, I absolutely love Natural Hair Extensions including I-Tips and Tape Ins, Silk Press, Colour and Styling

What Makes You Different?
I am very patient with my clients and work with them to achieve the style they want.  My patience means parents often let me handle their children’s hair.  I’m also a bit of a talker 🙂

Qualifications & Training
Level 2 Hairdressing
Level 3 Hairdressing
In Salon Colour Training
Certified Expert in Fabriq Smoothing Systems

I look forward to meeting you.

I recently had an incredible experience at the salon, where I had my hair done by Rihanna. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with warmth and professionalism. The atmosphere was relaxing, and I particularly enjoyed the soothing head massage – it was the perfect start to my appointment Rihanna did a fantastic job with my twists; I absolutely love them! She took the time to understand exactly what I wanted and executed it flawlessly. Additionally, Joseph was also very friendly and professional, making the whole experience even more enjoyable I highly recommend this salon to anyone looking for a great hairstyle in a welcoming environment. I can't wait for my next visit

I have been looking for a salon that specialises with Toddlers and use chemical free products for a long time. Thank God I found Afrotherapy and Riana, Salon is clean and calm and made me myself completely at ease. I showed Riana a picture of the style my daughter chose and the result was even better, this took 2.5 hours as you can imagine , its hard for me to make my daughter seat still for 15mins , and Riana interacted with my daughter and achieved this milestone. The whole team st the salon were very professional . We have booked a follow in appointment. Thank you @afrotherapy for the pleasant 1st salon date for my lil one.

Rebekah

What do you love most about hairdressing?
From as far back as I can remember, I’ve always loved hairdressing.  I kept running away from it and pursued studies and work in Childcare and Beauty Therapy however I circled back to the thing that I LOVE!
Hairdressing makes me happy.  I love seeing the results on my clients’ and how happy it makes them feel.

Please list any hairdressing qualifications along with any hairdressing training you’ve attended.
As hairdressing is a passion for me, I find it comes naturally.  I’ve been self-taught for the past 2 years but realised I needed to become qualified and train to become a Professional Hair stylist.  I’m currently studying Level 2 Hairdressing.

What areas of hairdressing are you skilled in?
I’ve been told my Knotless Braids. Twists, Cornrows, Ponytails & Quickweaves are on point.  I’m developing my skills in the other areas of hairdressing.

What would you most like your clients to know about you?
My clients always comment on how clean my hairstyles look.
I’m attentive, fun loving and talkative.

I look forward to meeting you.

Shantay

Hi, my name is Shantay.  I’m really excited to have joined the Afrotherapy team.

My Journey Into Hairdressing:
At the age of 15, I was passionate about 2 things.  I loved sports and I loved hairdressing.  I was a sprinter and part of the netball ball competing at various competitions.  I remember driving with my Dad to the careers open day at school and we talked about doing sports as my option.  I got to the hall and for some reason I was drawn to the hairdressing table.  I had a conversation with the tutors and I was sold and so began my journey into this amazing industry.  My Dad was surprised as our whole conversation was about Sports but he has always been supportive of my decision to get into hairdressing instead and I have had no regrets.

What I Love About Hairdressing:
I love people and I love helping people and hairdressing also allows me to express my creativity.  Since 15, it’s all I’ve done and I can’t see that changing.  My passion is colour and I want to be able to educate my clients on how to colour and keep their hair healthy.
I also love the constant change and evolution in hairdressing and being able to help my clients with their personal style.
Ultimately, I would like to be a Hairdressing Educator, supporting the next generation of hairdressers.

Courses & Qualifications:
Level 2 Hairdressing
Currently doing Level 3 Hairdressing
Certificate in Colour & Balayage
Certified Expert in Fabriq Smoothing Systems

I look forward to meeting you.

I must admit I do not normally participate in ratings, however my experience at Afrotherapy compels me to make this an exception, particularly since my experience with Afrotherapy was better than I had expected. Having not been to a hairdressers for the last 5 years since having had a bad experience when my hair was severely damaged through it being overprocessed with the wrong type of relaxer and colouring for my hair, I was therefore extremely cautious in finding a suitable and competent hairdresser. I came across Afrotherapy through doing some online research and although I had previously earmarked a couple of other hairdressers to check out they were immediately removed from my checklist once I found Afrotherapy and read their reviews. Admittedly I was a bit apprehensive in choosing a hairdressers that way as I would normally go through personal recommendations. I was given a thorough consultation and both Chris and Joseph came across as very professional and who definitely knew their stuff where hair is concerned. Ultimately I was extremely pleased with the result of the relaxer and colouring I received from Joseph and ditto with the cut and style I received from Chris. The numerous complements I have received about my hair since then is testament to the skills of them both.

Harriet

Afrotherapy Founder Harriet Kessie-Cudjoe is a talented Creative Director.  She has been passionate about hair and, in particular, multi textured, mixed race and afro hair since the age of 15.  Her extraordinary talent and commitment to the industry has seen her styling hair for over 31 years, winning numerous hairdressing awards along the way and her work widely published in both the trade and consumer press.

When not working in the salon, you’ll find her on hair and fashion shoots for various hair and fashion magazines, training and developing her team or providing comment and advice as a Hair Expert.

What do you love most about hairdressing?
I love making people look and feel fantastic.  I can’t think of any other job that allows me to be able to do that everyday.  It allows me to be able to express myself including my beliefs and values.  It also gives me the opportunity to nurture and mentor young people.  I find great satisfaction in seeing individuals I’ve trained progress and be successful.

My job also allows me to meet different people from all walks of life. My clients have actually taught me a lot over the years through the interaction that we have and I love learning all the time, so this is a great aspect of my job.

Who do you admire in the hairdressing industry and why?
There are so many brilliant individuals within the industry.  Vidal Sassoon is a true inspiration and a great ambassador for the industry.  Observing Errol Douglas over the years has taught me to never quit.  I’m inspired by the creativity of people like Desmond Murray and Angelo Seminara.  Also the longevity of people like Charlie Miller and how he has developed his team, kept it as a family business, yet inspired the team to achieve.  I’m also inspired by women like Beverly Cobella and Fiona O’Brien who are leaders in their field, yet have to maintain a family balance.
From the perspective of the business side of the industry, I admire Toni Mascolo of Toni & Guy for their business acumen.

What awards have you won over the years?
I have been fortunate enough to have won several Business & Hairdressing Awards.  These include:

  • Winner, Styling Team of The Year – Black Beauty/WAHL Awards
  • Finalist, L’Oreal Colour Trophy – Mizani Afro Look Award
  • National Finalist – HSBC Start Up Awards

It was my first time at the salon ,I was a little nervous as i didn’t know what to expect but left having a good experience and i’m happy with my new hair cut/look (I got a tapered cut), the owner /head stylist at the Salon Harriet was very nice to talk to and was reassuring, which made me feel comfortable to voice out what I wanted with the haircut I was going for, throughout the process of getting my hair done Harriet asked me how i felt about the direction of my haircut and if was happy with how it looked, how short I wanted it etc. I enjoyed getting my hair washed, my hair is type 4, high destiny hair (medium to thick strands) i have had past hair salon experiences where my natural hair wasn’t handled with care however at Afrotherapy that wasn’t the case it was one of the most relaxing washdays I’ve had. The other staff at the salon where lovely as well and the atmosphere of the salon was lovely, relaxing music, clean and simple design of the salon. A couple things I didn’t like as much was being told to change my original booking time to an earlier time, I’m based in south east london and the Salon is in North , pretty long journey, this meant not only did have to leave early , which initially planned to do but I felt added pressure which made me super anxious, which also meant had to rush m my journey to the salon (it didn’t help that there was traffic in the area going to the salon), Harriet explained why I needed to come to the salon earlier than I had planned due to the fact she needed to check the condition of my hair prior to my haircut and also asked for photos of my hair on the day of the appointment. Looking back I wish these 2 requests were made a day before or a couple days before my hair appointment so I didn’t feel so anxious on the day of my hair appointment, this is something that could be improved on to help with customer experience with the salon, if customers where given necessary info well in advance if possible . There was also a time I was left under the dryer for what I felt was a bit too long , it started to get slightly uncomfortable with the heat and although Harriet did finally check on me and my hair to see if it was dry (my hair was being set for a bantu knot out hairstyle with my tapered cut), I wished she would’ve of told me an estimate time for how long I would be under the drier or if i could take some breaks in between ( but that’s on me for not speaking up). Overall I did have a good first time experience at Afrothe
