What is Hair Made From?

Hair is a dead fiber composed of a protein called keratin. Keratin , in turn, is made up of long chains of amino acids created from what is known as the Cohn elements: carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur. These chains are joined together end to end like the beads of a necklace, and also cross each other, joined together by what is known as links. These links are responsible for the strength and elasticity of the strand of hair of which they are a part.

Each strand of hair is made up of three parts: the cuticle, the cortex and the medulla. The marrow is the innermost layer of hair, however, not everyone has it and it is more common to only find it in coarse and rough hair.

Why can’t my afro grow my hair longer?

Most of us have that one friend who cuts her hair and two months already have around the waist. You then ask yourself ‘why won’t my hair grow?’ The truth is that genetics has a good part of the blame. The rate of hair growth is determined biologically.

As your hair grows and gets longer it also gets heavier until the follicle gets too heavy to hold and sheds the hair. Don’t panic though – it will grow another!

How to grow afro hair – tops tips from Afrotherapy Afro Hair Salon in North London

If you are trying to make your hair grow but nothing works, it is time for you to change tactics. Think hard about how you treat your hair and consider if you are really doing everything right. To start, look at your styling tools: from the combs you use to the products you use to comb your hair. Brushes, foams, plates … check that everything is in perfect condition. Clean your utensils and limit the use of styling products, since your hair may be suffering from this cause.

The following tips can also be beneficial:

  • Eat a diet rich in protein, zinc and iron
  • Take supplements to help nourish your follicles and encourage hair growth
  • Use a gentle shampoo that gently exfoliates the scalp
  • Regular haircuts – although this will not make your hair grow faster it will prevent breakage, therefore increasing length.

At our afro hair salon in Edmonton, our hair styling team suggest regular hair cuts and using professional hair care products that suit your hairs’ natural type and texture.

We offer a selection of luxury deep conditioning hair treatments, that will leave your hair looking healthy and glossy.
