Choices of Hair Colour for Mixed Race & Afro Hair
We change our hair colour for a multitude of reasons. Perhaps you want to stand out in a crowd or maybe you simply want a hair colour that accentuates your skin tone and eye colour. At Afrotherapy we will help you to create a hair colour that suits you and your lifestyle. Platinum blonde: If you want to transform your naturally dark hair to platinum blonde we would highly recommend that you have this process carried out by a professional hair colour technician. Your hair will need to be stripped entirely of all colour and then toned to a platinum shade. Before we start, we will assess your hair before recommending how blonde your hair can go without causing irreparable damage.
Copper or red: This earthy red shade will add warmth and interest to your hair colour. You can add copper, auburn or red highlights for more natural look, opt for a full head of copper colour or flashes of colour – in the fringe, perhaps. Look for deep, rich shades.
Rich brown: If you feel your natural hair colour is lack-lustre but you do not want a drastic hair colour change, try adding a rich brown, black or chestnut colour. This can add interest to your natural hair colour and give it a shiny boost!
Golden blonde: Golden or honey blonde highlights add warmth to your hair colour. As with copper or red colours, opt for highlights for a natural look or ask for a full head of golden blonde hair colour for a more striking style.
Fashion colours: Because afro and mixed race hair colour tends to be naturally dark, you will find that stronger fashion colours work better than lighter colours. Reds, purples and blues looks great if you want to turn heads when you enter a room! Ombre hair colour or ‘root stretch’ continues to be a big trend so we can also create this ‘two-tone’ look to stylish effect.
Maintaining Hair Colour on Afro Hair The lighter you go with your hair colour, the more maintenance it will require. We would recommend you visit Afrotherapy every three to four weeks so we can cover root regrowth. Permanent hair colour also tends to dry out your hair a little so we will recommend the right treatments and products that will keep your hair looking glossy and moisturised and the colour looking vibrant.
Permanent or Semi Permanent Hair Colour for Mixed Race Hair
- Temporary Colours: Temporary hair colours only last until your next shampoo so they are perfect if you want a stunning new hair colour for a special night out or event. These chemical-free hair colours coat your hair rather than penetrating deep into the strands so they are safe to use on relaxed hair. They will not lighten your hair but will add colour such as deep reds and chestnut browns or even fashion colours like blue or purple.
- Semi-permanent Colours: Semi-permanent colours are applied to wet hair which has been shampooed. These colours are chemical-free and safe to use on processed hair. You will not see a drastic colour change with a semi permanent hair colour but they do last for between six and 10 shampoos, gradually fading over time.
- Permanent Colours: Permanent hair colour can give you a significant change. Various shades of colour can be achieved using hair colour with ammonia and peroxide. The colour does not wash out but will grow out as your hair grows.
