Causes of Thinning Hair in Black and African American Women

What causes thinning hair and hair loss in black and African American women?

Tight Braids and Weaves – If you continually wear tight braids and weaves you may suffer from hair loss, particularly around the temples and hairline.  This is known as traction alopecia.

Over-Processed Hair – Relaxers, curly perms and permanent hair colour can weaken your hair and lead to thinning if they are over-used.  At Afrotherapy we are experts stylists and colourists who will only offer you a chemical treatment if we feel your hair and scalp are in a healthy condition.  We use Goldwell hair colouring products which work beautifully on afro and multi-textured hair, and we offer a wide range of deep conditioning treatments.

Over Styling – If you are constantly over-heating your hair through blow drying or using heated styling tools, your hair may become weak and damaged. Treat your hair with respect and resist the temptation to over-use styling tools, including too much combing and brushing.  If you are due for a relaxer service, use a light gel and a soft brush to flatten the hairline or use a silk or satin scarf for 30 minutes or more to encourage your hair to lie flat.

Stress – Stress can lead to hair loss so make sure you find time to relax and wind down.  Stress can affect your overall health and wellbeing as well as the condition of your hair.

Medication – Hair loss and thinning can be a cause of some medication.  Consult your doctor to find out what you can do to reduce the side effects.  Perhaps there is another medication that is just as effective but without the side effects.

Poor Nutrition – We all know we should eat plenty of fruit and veg, reduce our intake of sweet and sugary food and drink and cut down on alcohol.  If you struggle to eat a healthy and balanced diet, consider taking nutritional supplements that support general health and hair growth.

Scalp Conditions – If your scalp is itchy, flaky and sore you could be suffering from a bacterial or fungal infection.  If left untreated this can lead to hair loss so please visit your doctor for advice.  At Afrotherapy we can also check the health of your scalp and hair and suggest treatments that may help.

Hormonal Changes – Some women may experience hair loss or thinning during pregnancy or the menopause. This is due to changes in hormone levels.  Visit your doctor for advice.

  • massaging the area to stimulate the blood flow
  • hot oil treatments and conditioning treatments
  • avoiding tension on the hair (braiding etc)
  • increase protein and zinc intake (within daily diet)
